Many people with high blood sugar end up with diabetes and its many complications, including heart disease. One serious consequence of heart disease and risk factors that often occur in people with diabetes, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, can be congestive heart failure, or CHF.
CHF is a progressively disabling condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs. As a result fluid can build up in the lungs and extremities, making it hard to do any physical activity without losing your breath. Other symptoms of CHF include fatigue, poor appetite, and difficulty concentrating.
Certain drugs may help the heart work better despite its problems, but they can have major side effects and interact with other medications. Finding non-drug alternative treatments for CHF in a diabetic is always a good goal. Now there is a new study reporting that a simple personal biofeedback device called RespERate can help.
In this controlled study, elderly CHF patients who used the RespERate device had a significant reduction in shortness of breath and associated symptoms. The improvements occurred within 4 weeks of starting to practice the way of controlling the breath with the feedback from the equipment.

A caveat in interpreting the study is that the manufacturer has a vested interest in showing the benefits of their product. However, given its lack of side effects and track record of positive studies for lowering high blood pressure that does not always respond to medications, it is worth serious consideration by anyone who wants natural treatments for the many aspects of diabetes they may face, including high blood pressure and/or CHF.
