One of the more practical ways to get the combinations of natural supplements that diabetics need to promote blood sugar health is to use proprietary products such as Nature Made’s Diabetes Health Pack. This is a very popular combination supplement containing vitamins, minerals, and alpha lipoic acid. Obviously, it won’t help everyone with diabetes, and it is formulated with a focus on what people with type 2 diabetes most need.
For instance, something like chromium can be helpful to lessen insulin resistance (a type 2 diabetic problem), but won’t have much benefit for most type 1 diabetics, whose problem is a lack of insulin because of auto-antibodies against their own insulin-producing cells.
So, what are the ingredients in the Diabetes Health Pack? They include the following:
- Chromium 500 mcg
- Selenium 70 mcg
- Multivitamin/Multimineral – vitamins A (beta-carotene included), D4, E, K, B1, B2, niacin, B6, vitamin B12, biotin, pantothenic acid, calcium, phosphorus, iodine, magnesium, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, chloride, potassium, boron, nickel, silicon, vanadium, and lutein, in addition to the other items listed here.
- Folic acid 800 mcg
- Vitamin C 560 mg
- Alpha Lipoic Acid 50 mg with Green Tea Extract 50 mg
My impression is that this is a good foundation for someone with elevated blood sugar levels or type 2 diabetes. The amount of alpha lipoic acid is actually not enough to address the nerve pain in feet or hands that is a common complication of diabetes (peripheral neuropathy). For that latter problem, you might need 600 mg per day.The vanadium is a mineral capable of lowering blood sugar, as is the lipoic acid. Whether or not it is enough in your particular case or appropriate is something to discuss with your nutritionist and doctor.
Overall, you might still be needing to add additional supplements to get full benefit of what nutritional supplements could do to help you reverse diabetes. Still, as a protective insurance against deficiencies and a bit of support to fill in what diabetics lose in the urine, this Diabetes Health Pack is a solid supplement.
